New Scholarship Supports Science Students

Lois Albert created the Mary Ann Sanders Lawrence Memorial Scholarship in memory of her great-great grandmother. Mary Ann Sanders Lawrence wanted to become a doctor, but at the time women were not able to pursue the profession. Through this scholarship, Albert hopes to make it more affordable for students to further their education and change their lives. She believes Northwestern Oklahoma State University gives students that opportunity.

Lois Albert is a 1960 graduate of Northwestern Oklahoma State University, where she majored in chemistry and minored in physics and mathematics. The thing she enjoyed the most about Northwestern was its small campus.

“Lois Albert was a pioneer in her own right with majors and minors in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), all of which were dominated by men in the 1960s,” said Skeeter Bird, CEO, Northwestern Foundation & Alumni Association.  “I am confident that her great-grandmother Mary Ann Sanders Lawrence would be pleased with Lois’ accomplishments, as well as Northwestern’s position in allowing women to compete with men in the classroom and, therefore, in the workplace.”

Applicants for the Mary Ann Sanders Lawrence Memorial Scholarship must be full-time continuing students majoring in biology, chemistry or physics with a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average. To be considered, students must complete the scholarship application form through the Financial Aid Office on any Northwestern campus. The scholarship may be applied toward university-related expenses, including tuition, fees, books, and room and board.
