Establishes Scholarships

The passion of an educator creates opportunities

ALVA, Okla. (Aug. 31, 2018) - Florence Louise McCoy’s passion for students and education has now been memorialized with two endowed scholarships to benefit students attending Northwestern Oklahoma State University. McCoy’s bequest will be shared by two of Northwestern’s campuses and named the Florence Louise McCoy Scholarship-Alva Campus and the Florence Louise McCoy Scholarship-Woodward Campus.

McCoy, nee Hogle, was born on her parents’ homestead in Vici, Okla., on February 12, 1923. She graduated from Vici High School as valedictorian and later earned her Elementary Education degree from Northwestern State College, now Northwestern Oklahoma State University, in 1962. She married Carrol McCoy in 1965.

With the spirit of the consummate educator, McCoy maintained an interest in the classroom past her teaching career. She enjoyed learning about the changes in teaching field throughout her life. McCoy passed February 18, 2016, at the age of 93 years old.

“Florence Louise McCoy’s legacy as a passionate educator lives on through these two generous scholarships,” said Skeeter Bird, CEO, Northwestern Foundation & Alumni Association. “Her investment will impact the lives of our students indefinitely, and we are honored by her gift.”

Applicants for the Florence Louise McCoy Scholarship-Woodward Campus must be continuing students attending Northwestern’s Woodward Campus, with at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average. To be considered, students must complete the scholarship application form through the Financial Aid Office on any Northwestern campus. The scholarship may be applied toward university-related expenses, including tuition, fees, books, and room and board.
