Memory of Fred “Dick” and Gladys Smith honored with new scholarship

Dick Smith basketballALVA, Okla. (Feb. 15, 2019) – The Fred O. “Dick” and Gladys W. Smith Scholarship was established by their family in Dec. 2018 to honor Dick’s basketball legacy and their family’s love for Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

Dick was a member of the Northwestern basketball team from 1931-1935 and was named to the All-Conference team three years. He was the top scorer on the 1935 Northwestern Championship team. After concluding his basketball career at Northwestern, Dick continued playing on various Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) teams. He was a three-time AAU All-American and was named into the Helms Hall of Fame and the Missouri Valley AAU Hall of Fame. In 1993, he returned to his alma mater to be inducted into Northwestern’s Sports Hall of Fame.

During Dick’s post-Northwestern basketball career, his family moved around for his career. When he retired from playing in the late 1940s, they relocated back to their hometown of Dacoma, Okla., where he opened a gas station and began farming. Gladys supported her husband’s careers and encouraged their children’s education. Dick and Gladys were loyal Northwestern basketball fans for many years, Gladys was still attending games into her 90s.

Northwestern has been a big part of the family’s education with many either attending or graduating from the university. Children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have contributed to football, basketball, baseball, rodeo, cheerleading, choirs and marching band.

Dick and Gladys SmithDick and Gladys lived their lives with a desire to help others. The family hopes this scholarship will enable students to focus on their education success rather than worrying about their finances.
