Bob and Shelly Battisti Basketball Scholarship is Established

ALVA Okla. (September 30, 2019) The Bob and Shelly Battisti Basketball Scholarship was established in 2019 by the Battisti family. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to a junior or senior non-starter on the men’s basketball team.

Coach Bob Battisti has a deep respect and appreciation for Northwestern Oklahoma State University and the Alva community.

“I was lucky to work with such great people at Northwestern,” Battisti said. “I love Northwestern and the people who played for me. I am happy to leave a great deal of goodness and generosity behind.”

Battisti was the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Northwestern from 1986-2007 and served as the Athletic Director from 2007-2011. Battisti’s teams were often known for their intense defensive style. Over his 21-year tenure at Northwestern, his teams posted a record of 374-265. Battisti led the Rangers to six conference titles and finished in the NAIA Top 25 seven times. For his efforts, he was named a conference coach of the year five times.

He was selected as the NAIA National Coach of the Year by the Basketball Times magazine in 1994 after a 29-2 season. His teams also advanced to the NAIA National Tournament on six occasions, including an appearance in the National Quarterfinals in 2007.

After leaving Northwestern in 2011, Battisti joined the Oklahoma Christian University basketball staff as an assistant coach. Battisti then spent five seasons coaching at Southwestern Oklahoma State University as Head Men’s Basketball Coach, retiring in 2017. Currently, he gives back to the game by volunteering in whatever capacity he can.

“To me Northwestern was home” said Battisti. “I wanted to give back to a place that was so kind to me. Northwestern is and always will be home.”

“Bob and Shelly have a long history with Northwestern and its basketball program, and our fans and former players hold a special place in their hearts for them,” said Dr. Janet Cunningham, President, Northwestern Oklahoma State University. “We are honored they have chosen to continue their support of student-athletes through this scholarship.”
